finally! i scored an amazing jewellery box!
my sister and i were walking talking walking, stopping by vintage stores in our neighbourhood looking talking looking... and found this gorgeous wood jewellery box at value village for whole 700 pennies. there was a sticker on the bottom that indicated this was once valued at $70 retail. it's only got minor scratches and a bit of chip on the top right side, otherwise in very good shape. it is just perfect!
yay!

Designer and Illustrator Ward Jenkins came across Peter P. Plasencia's illustrations for a 1964 book called Jules Verne: The Man Who Invented the Future by Franz Born. He writes:
A great book, with even greater illustrations by Peter P. Plasencia, who, as you may recall, illustrated the wonderful Space Alphabet book. I love seeing how Peter utilized the gouache to create various depths of field by the use of the subtle shades of grey. All the while, flattening the space within the composition. Superb work. Love it.

Shirin Sahba

Books & Oranges (detail)

Dinner is Getting Cold

 Feeding the Fish

The Maharani Seeks Adventure

"Since the beginning, her commitments to canvas of her reflections on the nature of diverse peoples' engagements with myriad spaces have evolved a unique consciousness in her art: humanity is one and humanity's watchword is unity in diversity. And to accept this is to insist on drawing (out) the joy, the goodness, the beauty of people relating to people relating to spaces. To see the joy even of separation, the goodness even of sadness, and the beauty even of failure. The nostalgia of place, the sense of being of but not in Shirin's landscapes, or vice versa, is what engenders the shared sense of expansive intimacy and secure vulnerability that is unique to her work." -from shirinsahba.com

Neglected Moments

I wonder, why I am here? Where I am from and heading to?
Don't you reveal my tranquil home, my origin?
-Rumi

"The airport is a metaphor of our existing world, a setting that we get to from different origins, we stay in for a while, and we leave from for different destinations. So I considered the situation the same as a gift, just like life itself, a very unpredictable piece of time which we as humans have been allowed to experience, to explore, to encounter, to walk around, to love, to learn, to help, to teach, to have fun, to play, to amuse and to enjoy.

How many of us close our eyes and miss our opportunities, our very chance just to be out there! Why, every now and then, do we ignore the very moment of our existence? There are always excuses; to be tired or to be in rush are probably two of the most favourite. It does not matter, where we are and how much time we have. What matters is how we use it."

it's true. i always make excuses and complaints.
i know it's a bad habit and i know that i should do something about it.
but as most bad habits are like the nasty stain on your favourite white shirt.
i will probably look back and think of this moment and remind myself of what i had committed to fix these nasty habits and think of the same things over and over and over again.
perhaps this viscous cycle will never end..... but that does not mean i'll ever give up.

i will look up in the sky once in a while... to remind myself how blue the sky is.
i will walk along  the lake (despite how close it is to my work, i always neglect it and take it for granted)... to remind myself how much the sound of water calms me.
i will say one nice thing about anything at least once a day... to remind myself of karma.
i will try my best not to make compromises with myself.... because that will never get me anywhere.

despite the freeeezing weather and crazy snow storm, we went to see the falls on the weekend. everything was frozen. felt like i was in winter wonderland. every time i go see the falls, it feels like the surge of water is sucking my stress away from me; bye-bye stress! it's a refreshing feeling.  someday i'd love to see the frozen falls.

i'm definitely planning on returning in summer to see the botanical garden and the butterfly conservatory. i just love going there, so beautiful in the summer. meanwhile, we did bit of touristy things like going to the hersey store. mmmm chocolate......

healthy diet

i was a very picky eater. even now i still wont eat things that i know are good for me. so now i am a picky eater. just can't help to think mushrooms are just fungi that imitate meat. but i've adjusted to that and will allow white mushrooms from time to time.

anyways, over the years i learned to eat onions (though only cooked, i won't eat it raw for the sake of bad breath), garlic, leeks, green onions, bell pepper, pepper, broccoli, and more greens.
but just can't quite like the taste and the smell of celery still. i've read about how amazing this is for me and decided to chop it to micro scale (or small enough that i cannot taste it) and include in anything i cook. hopefully, despite the fact that they are so tiny, i will get some benefits from the almighty celery.

maybe it will grow on me, i dunno.... i try to eat as healthy as possible and it's been tough, especially when i am on restricted diet of NOT eating things made with wheat flour... pretty much everything i love... bread... croissants... noodles... pasta..... very depressing. finding alternatives haven't been too easy. i find i have to make most of the stuff myself. sigh...

it's funny how your body changes as you grow. i'd be able to drink as many cups of coffee a day and will be totally fine the next day, but now, even latte will give me a stomach ache. switching over to tea wasn't as bad, but no bread just ruins everything. :,(  hopefully my results will be a happy one where i can freely eat some bread in the future. fingers crossed!

North Korean Images at Utopia’s Edge

Photo by Nick Kozak / Torontoist

Canada's first-ever exhibition of North Korean art opened at the University of Toronto Art Centre.

“North Korean Images at Utopia's Edge,” on display at the University of Toronto Art Centre, is the first exhibition of North Korean art in Canada. Its 24 linocut prints are drawn from the collection of Nicholas Bonner, a U.K.-born, Beijing-based architect, tour operator and filmmaker who's visited North Korea monthly since 1992. - from the star

I occasionally visit the UTAC and often find it hit&miss.. but this i would definitely like to go see. i am going to have to take a day off work to go this though.... the gallery hours are not working with my working hours.. c'mon!!

everything is extremely frozen still.
i am not looking forward to a huge storm tonight
i miss wearing my shorts
i miss seeing green grass
i miss biking
i miss seeing butterflies
i miss seeing colour
i miss the spring
i even miss the pollen allergies... well maybe not...

photo session for the new exhibitions

yesterday, i had a photo session with Tom, to take photos of the new exhibitions. it took about 7hours to shoot the entire building. phew.... much of the archival documenting was done by him, i was assisting for most part, and few instructions here and there. but i managed to take few shots of my faves, aka highlights of 2011 winter exhibitions! hee hee

Sin-Ying Ho, Eden series

these urns are HUGE... i mean.... larger than life (H 69" x D 18.5"). i just get lost staring at them.. mesmerizing.... truly... and Sin-Ying is actually smaller than me... i'm just shy of being 160cm here...

Rachael Wong, Flat Depth

red painted shadows.... which took entire week to finish.... this is just a teaser compared to the one on the opposite wall... gorgeous presentation.

Despo Sophocleous, Out of Place 4 series

transformation and interaction are achieved in sense of movement. to me, they are robust architectural forms that have turned into delicate piece of jewellery.

Sandra Smirle, Been & Gone, 100 random temporal observations

i have this fascination with paper cut-outs. this particular one documents random timed snapshots of daily movements taken over a 100-day period. seriously...  one of these days i am going to attempt to make my own paper cut-outs and seriously cut myself... oops!

uniquely designed paper/plastic tiles make up a very brightly lit room. i just hope no one will fall through and break the entire installation.. yikes....

the infamous ravine house down to its skeletons. it was featured in the movie chloe. gotta say, i really loved the house.. not so much the movie...

if u live in toronto, come down to see amazing exhibitions at harbourfront centre soon!!!
