sleeping time

i made my very first sleeping eye mask today.
it was so FUN!
made me realize how much i miss doing little diy crafty things...
i didn't have any elastic bands, so i've attached two ribbons on the sides to tie, hopefully it will stay on throughout the night..... if not i will have to get some elastic bands later.

이제 밝은데서도 잠 잘~ 자겠다^-^

Nautilus by Alicia Bastian

a private bookcase/reading space

if i had this when i was growing up, would i have liked reading then?

my sister scored some elizabeth grant samples today.
i only tried the hand&foot cream (the orange cap).... and it smells
phew...
the tube reads...
"you may take one big whiff and say ew what's that smell? Answer: camphor"
i guess it will super moisturize your skin despite its smell.
kinda smell like tiger balm .. turns out it also has camphor.... a ha!

even though i am eager to try these new samples..... (i've never heard of elizabeth grant)
i recently changed skincare line to benefit's new b!right skin care... face wash and cream.
loving the cool and subtle smell.... kinda like cucumber plus floral scent?
i love how the wash reduces redness and the cream moisturizes my dry skin.
love it love it love it ♡

[ed burtynsky] oil

2 sneaked photos... oops

rosalyn and i finally went to rom to see ed burtynsky's oil exhibition.
for doors open, admission was free. awesome.

Edward Burtynsky: Oil features fifty-three beautiful and provocative large-format photographs by internationally renowned Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky. His images explore the hotly-debated effects of oil extraction, our international dependency on the substance, and with an unflinching eye, Burtynsky presents us with the reality of oil production as its role in our civilization undergoes massive transformation. Burtynsky's photographs render his subjects with transfixing clarity and detail. His extensive exploration is organized thematically into three distinct groupings: Extraction and Refinement, Transportation and Motor Culture, and The End of Oil.  - from rom

Densified Oil Drums #4 Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, 1997

Oxford Tire Pile #9a Westley, California, USA, 1999

my favourite photographs were all from the end of oil series.
we always hear about all these environmentally hazardous stories, but seeing them in large photographs really made me think again about how much garbage we make in the world.

Recycling #10 Chittagong, Bangladesh, 2001

this photograph was located next to the intro panel.
it had a huge impact on how i viewed the exhibition.
this really hows the bottom of the whole process... bare footprints of the labour-laden workers. sigh..
i was quite surprised by the wall-e-esque oil drum cube mountain that is situated in hamilton.
wonder if i can go and see it in person....

amazing exhibition.
next up, abstract expressionists new york at ago!

STAGE
CHAO-LIANG SHEN

Since the 1970s, Taiwan society has developed a unique cabaret culture. In the early years, towns would invite performing groups to sing and dance for a variety of occasions ranging from wedding banquets and funerals to religious ceremonies. In order to move conveniently around the country, they chose to perform in modest theatre set ups – usually in a camp or on a truck modified specifically for the performance.

As Taiwan gradually developed into a more industrial and modernized economy, the performances evolved through the introduction of new technologies and equipment for special effects. Despite these changes, the traditional elements of Taiwanese cabaret can still be found today – joyful, spontaneous, innovative and highly interactive shows for generations of Taiwanese audiences from all walks of life and in every corner of the island.

This photographic series focuses on the moving stage itself, usually a truck theatre may weigh from 8 to 15 tons, and is regarded as an integral part of the performance that can attract a considerable number of people.
The “truck theaters” presented here are either the most popular or unique ones used in cabaret performances today. It is hoped that, through this “window” of these colorful “truck theaters”, the diversity and richness of Taiwanese culture can be introduced to more people from around the world.

Shen Chao-Liang was born in Tainan, R.O.C(Taiwan), in 1968. He obtained his master degree from the Graduate School of the Applied Media Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts. Shen worked as a photojournalist and vice-convener at the Liberty Times, and the Artist-in-Residence at the National Central University. Shen has been broadly recognized for his sophisticated style of image creation and commitment to documenting the evolution of Taiwanese society. Shen’s works are published and exhibited both at home and abroad.

satin fuchsia

my sister and i went to one of my fave restaurants: konichiwa
miso ramen and katsudon is always yum yum yum
i always can't decide which dish to get.. so it's perfect when we order one of each and share! yay!

we also went to our fave shop: sephora
karen was looking for a pink lipstick and found the perfect one!!!
make up forever 36 satin fuchsia

i don't wear lipstick. one, i don't look good wearing it, or maybe i haven't found the colour that suits me. two, i have to keep applying.. it just looks bad when the colour fades and you are left with what look like horrible lipliner. but it does brighten your face, maybe next visit will be spent looking for a shade for me.

[joe bagley]

i am extremely fascinated with paper art... especially when it comes to paper cutting.
my obsession with paper cuts and bike is well represented by mr bagley. yay

there are also amazing architecture paper cuts that can only be described as...
hours and hours of sitting.. concentrating.. cutting... eye soring... tearing a bit... paper or blade cuts... ouch..

micro kissing on a bike, about the size of a nickel
and an awesome video of the process of the larger kissing on a bike.

dare i try to do this at home?

observation: rainy day

rainy day by eric barclay

i love the rain
no wait.. i hate the rain...
second thought... yes, i love the rain.

it's a love/hate relationship for me.
i like a summer's cool shower but hate the misty spring rain. it only makes my hair grow into a mane.

as most children do, i used to run around in the rain as a child. often getting sick the day after, but it feels great, sensational and refreshing. people would look at me funny if i do it now... thinking maybe i'm not quite all there.... i kind of miss all that fun, jumping in puddles... soaking wet in the pouring rain.

i try to use umbrella as much as i can on a rainy day.
strange though.... i hardly see people use umbrellas. why?

my sister and i share a big umbrella together... this way we can still talk to each other while walking, and creates the feeling of being together. it also applies to mom, dad, close friends, and boyfriend.
but i hardly see this happening.
sure. if you are walking with someone who you are not too comfortable sharing your umbrella, it's understandable. but it seems strange that a couple would not share an umbrella.
the boyfriend is holding the umbrella above his head while his girlfriend is getting wet, clinging to his arm.
it's a strange picture for me, really. does he not care that his girlfriend is getting wet from the rain?
(unless there's some kind of behind story to all of this)
i also don't see friends (i mean girls) sharing umbrellas either.

rain reminds me of a story my friend told me a long time ago (which i think it's silly):
not too long after my friend moved to canada, it was raining and she had prepared an umbrella before she left for school. but she saw that no one was using umbrellas, so she naturally put the umbrella in her bag and walked to school, getting wet. really?

ever since this 'umbrella' thing was spoiled i keep seeing it every rainy day.
i am really really curious.

am i the strange one sharing an umbrella or sharing an umbrella something people don't do?
or not using one at all..?

happy birthday mommy
love you always
